Software-based VoIP is the cheapest, easiest, and fastest way to VoIP heaven. Basically this method uses VoIP software to allow you to make free calls from your PC to your friend's PC via the Internet.

However this is a catch, in order for this to work, you friend will have to use the same software. So before choosing a program, find what your friend are using.

Choices

If you have ever used an online chat program, you probably know that some of these applications have voice chat features (in addition to basic chatting function). While this is not exactly VoIP in the purest sense, it works all the same. Popular examples are: MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk. Both MSN and Yahoo! are loaded with features, while Google Talk is built on pure simplicity.

All three programs allow you to make free PC to PC voice calls, so it still depends on your personal preference to decide which best. However, if you already have an account with one of these programs and most of your contacts are on it too, perhaps it is best to maintain your original choice.

But, if you're new to VoIP and want to try out the real VoIP experience, get a soft phone (a computer program that simulates a real phone). You're likely to find many soft phones available for free online. Skype offering tend to be the best at least for now, well you may try to use other programs that you like most since it's free online.

Consideration

Once everything is up and running, get your friend to do the same and you can make VoIP calls to each other for free! It also helps if both parties have a decent Internet connection because VoIP is largely dependant on a stable connection to work smoothly. Obviously, software-based VoIP works best if you have a few selected people you often call. Otherwise, you might want to consider a hardware-based VoIP solution.

If you still wish to stay on the software path, there are a few programs in the market that allow you to make call from your PC to landline or mobile phone. But the companies who support this service usually charge a small fee to pay for the cost of transferring your call from the Internet to PSTN or mobile network.
